At La Voix Studios, we always remind our singers that the voice is not only about singing technique but also about caring for the muscles surrounding the voice.

One technique we highly recommend for many singers is laryngeal massage.

What Is a Laryngeal Massage?

A laryngeal massage is a gentle massage around the muscles of the neck, jaw and larynx (voice box). These muscles can often become tight from:

• vocal strain • overuse • stress and anxiety • poor posture • tension while singing• excessive speaking or shouting

When these muscles become tense, the voice may feel tight, tired, strained or uncomfortable.

How Can It Help Singers?

Laryngeal massage may help singers by:

• reducing muscle tension around the voice• helping the voice feel freer and easier• improving vocal comfort and flexibility• reducing throat tightness• supporting recovery after vocal fatigue or strain• encouraging healthier vocal function

Many singers notice that after a massage, their voice feels lighter, less restricted and easier to control.

Especially Helpful During Recovery

If a singer is recovering from vocal strain, tension or overuse, laryngeal massage can sometimes support the recovery process alongside proper vocal rest and guidance from a vocal coach or medical professional.

It is important to understand that massage is not a quick fix, but it can be a very useful supportive tool when used correctly and gently.

Tension & Anxiety

Many singers carry emotional stress directly in the jaw, neck and throat area without even realising it.

This tension can affect: • breathing • vocal support • range • tone • vocal freedom

Relaxing these muscles can help singers feel calmer, more connected and more vocally balanced.

Important Reminder

Laryngeal massage should always be performed gently and by qualified professionals such as ENT specialists, speech therapists and certified vocal coaches trained in this area.

At La Voix Studios, this may also be done during sessions with me when appropriate and beneficial for the singer.

If you are experiencing pain, ongoing hoarseness or vocal difficulties, please speak to your vocal coach and seek professional medical advice when needed.

Your voice deserves care, patience and healthy technique 🤍
